My work begins with observation. I am inspired by the ways light can shape how we feel within a landscape and how colour shifts through the seasons.

I collect visual references through photographs and drawings, using them as a starting point to explore composition, colour and form. These early studies allow me to better understand what I see before developing a finished painting.

Working in pencil, watercolour, pastel and acrylic, I build images gradually through layers of colour and mark-making. I am interested in how colour can shape the atmosphere of a scene and evoke the feeling of being there, whether in a landscape, a still life, or the study of an animal.

Much of my work is inspired by the landscape of West Yorkshire, where I live, as well as places encountered while travelling. Through painting and drawing I try to capture not just a view, but the memory and experience of being present within it.
